What is a School Council?

At Wylam First School, our School Council members are a highly valued group of children who represent the voice and opinions of all the children within our school.

Through our School Council we aim to develop young leadership skills, whilst supporting student democracy. Most importantly, our strong team of Councilors aim to promote the well-being of the children within our inclusive school.

The School’s Council is an ideal opportunity for pupils to get more involved in the way the school is run. It benefits the whole school, pupils and teachers, because it provides opportunities for pupils to communicate their feelings as well as influence decisions that are made.

At Wylam First School the student council is made up of representatives from Y3 and Y4 who are voted in by the children. At the beginning of the year the Student Council ia given a range of tasks/responsibilities that support school self evaluation and future development planning. Along with this they work on priorities they have identified through pupil voice activities and through their own suggestions.

What we have been up to:

Last year we worked hard to improve our outdoor area. We completed surveys to find out what the children wanted and held a ballot to choose the final option. The children chose to purchase new climbing and fitness equipment. This was fitted in September and we all love it!

In the Spring term we had the very important job of interviewing for our new Deputy Headteacher. We asked some very important questions and our Deputy Headteacher started with us in September. We made the right decision!

In June we were invited along to the Governing Board meeting to present our findings from pupil voice activities we had carried out about wellbeing, safety and safeguarding. We highlighted all of the strengths and gave some ideas about how to solve any concerns that were raised.

2022-2023
This term we have been given the task of looking at important policies in the school. We are talking to children about behaviour and will be contributing to the review of the Behaviour Policy, Prevention of Bullying Policy and Wellbeing Policy. We will also be planning activities for our Friendship week in November and leading some whole school assemblies.
