What is a School Council?

At Wylam First School, our School Council members are a highly valued group of children who represent the voice and opinions of all the children within our school.

Through our School Council we aim to develop young leadership skills, whilst supporting student democracy. Most importantly, our strong team of Councilors aim to promote the well-being of the children within our inclusive school.

The School’s Council is an ideal opportunity for pupils to get more involved in the way the school is run. It benefits the whole school, pupils and teachers, because it provides opportunities for pupils to communicate their feelings as well as influence decisions that are made.

At Wylam First School the student council is made up of representatives from Y3 and Y4 who are voted in by the children. At the beginning of the year the Student Council ia given a range of tasks/responsibilities that support school self evaluation and future development planning. Along with this they work on priorities they have identified through pupil voice activities and through their own suggestions.

2025-2026
this year the School Council will ensure that the Children’s Safeguarding policy is up to date and shared with all the rest of the school.  They will also be run different school event such as friendship week and be the spokespeople for the children’s views on the ‘little changes’ we will make to ensure our school goes from strength to strength.
